We analyzed 19,654 Arizona home-service businesses. 1 in 7 of their websites is effectively dead.
We maintain a verified database of local home-service businesses: the plumbers, HVAC techs, electricians, contractors, cleaners, and locksmiths that keep a state running. For Arizona, that's 19,654 business records, each checked for whether the business has a website, whether that website actually works, and how it's reviewed online.
The picture is rougher than most people assume.
Most of the market can't really be found
Of the 19,654 businesses on record, only 7,820 list any website at all. The other ~12,000 rely on directory listings, a social page, or word of mouth. And "lists a website" is not the same as "has a website that works":
- 6,702 have a real, custom website of their own (34% of all businesses).
- 1,056 point to a website that is effectively dead: expired domain, dead hosting, a parked page, or a site that no longer loads. That's 13.5% of every website listed, about 1 in 7.
- 60 run on DIY site builders, and a handful more point at directory profiles rather than a site of their own.
A dead website is arguably worse than no website. A customer who taps a dead link doesn't think "I'll try their phone number instead." They think the business closed, and they call the next result.
Website status of all 19,654 businesses
- 11,834 list no website at all (60%)
- 6,702 have a real, working website (34%)
- 1,056 list an effectively dead website (5%)
- 62 DIY builder or directory-only (under 1%)
The gap by trade
The share of businesses with a real website varies a lot by trade. In Arizona's biggest home-service categories:
Even in the best-covered trade, more than half the market has no real website. Among general contractors, it's more than four out of five.
Why this matters if you're one of them
These aren't abstract numbers. They're your local search results. When 60–80% of your direct competitors can't be found properly online, showing up with a fast, professional site is one of the cheapest competitive advantages left in local services. And if you're one of the 1,056 businesses paying for a domain that no longer loads, you're funding your competitors' next customer.
We publish city-by-city, trade-by-trade breakdowns of this data on our local market data pages.
Methodology: aggregate statistics computed from 19,654 verified Arizona business records in the Lighthouse Pro business database, updated August 2026. Website status is classified automatically (real custom site, DIY builder, directory-only, social-only, dead, or none) and spot-checked. Aggregates only; no individual business data is published.
